Sri Vijaya Puram, September 23: A 70-year-old man died in a road accident involving a scooty and a truck at the Fisheries Colony road behind Ajay Bhag area in Junglighat on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Chandran, a resident of Junglighat, who was reportedly working as a bike mechanic in the Junglighat Fisheries Colony area.
According to preliminary information, Chandran was riding a scooty when he reportedly attempted to overtake a truck. During the manoeuvre, he allegedly lost control of the scooty and fell onto the road. He came under the front wheel of the truck and sustained fatal injuries. He was reportedly found dead at the spot.
Local residents raised concerns over the presence of abandoned and unused vehicles parked along the road stretch. According to villagers, such vehicles occupy a portion of the carriageway and frequently contribute to traffic congestion and difficulties for commuters.
Residents alleged that the presence of the parked vehicles may have contributed to the circumstances leading todays accident. They said that while attempting to overtake the truck, Chandran reportedly encountered parked vehicles ahead and tried to manoeuvre his scooty, following which he lost balance and fell.
Following the incident, a police team from Aberdeen Police Station reached the spot and shifted the deceased’s body to GB Pant Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the accident. Further details are awaited.
The incident has also renewed concerns among residents regarding abandoned vehicles occupying public roads. Residents have urged the Andaman and Nicobar Administration and concerned authorities to identify and take appropriate action regarding long-abandoned vehicles obstructing road space, in accordance with applicable rules, to improve road safety and ease traffic movement.
